Nathan Matson

Education
Nathan Matson is a multi-percussionist who teaches snare drumming, drum set, hand percussion and mallets. Originally from Cody, Wyoming, he began private instruction at age 11. This led to years of study from several different teachers. Nathan was selected for three years consecutively to the prestigious Wyoming All-State Honor Band which led to a music scholarship at the University of Wyoming, where he studied percussion with Cathy Livings, PhD. Although entering as music major, he graduated with a BA degree in Social Work. Consequently, he spent about 7 years in the field of youth services. Still the music beckoned, and in 1997 Nathan completed an AA degree in Applied Music from Laramie County Community College. Instructors included Jane Iverson PhD (theory) and Steve Barnhart, PhD (percussion). Other musical influences include Poncho Sanchez, Glen Velez and the great Alan Dawson.

Teaching Experience
In 1997, Nathan started a private teaching studio in Cheyenne Wyoming. In 2000, he relocated to Bellingham, Washington, where he has taught privately ever since. He became affiliated with the Mojo School of Music in 2006, instructing individuals and groups, as well as the very popular “Intro to Hand Drumming” class. Nathan’s students are active, participating in recitals and school bands. Some have been selected for the following:
